Figueres would probably have remained an inconspicuous town, no different from other Catalan cities. However, its fate changed on May 11, 1904, when the future genius of surrealism was born. The museum, nestled in Dalí’s hometown, resembles a mysterious obelisk where various architectural styles harmoniously coexist. It holds the secrets of the artist’s life and exposes the most intimate chapters of his artistic journey. As you explore the master’s greatest masterpieces, you’ll find yourself immersed in a surrealist reverie, where fantasies blur with reality, and a zest for life intertwines with a passion for his beloved Gala.

This building stands as the largest surrealist creation in the world, personally envisioned by the artist himself. Every aspect exudes the inexhaustible energy of its creator, from its form to its contents. Dalí’s boundless imagination extends even to its exterior. The museum building and the Galatea Tower, named after the artist’s wife Gala, are adorned with giant eggs. They contrast vividly with the dark-red walls with golden specks, depicting loaves of bread.  But the defining feature of this extraordinary structure is the spherical dome, erected above the old theater building.

When Salvador Dalí conceived this project, he couldn’t have predicted that it would become an iconic landmark in Figueres. The spherical glass dome has since become the symbol of the city. Dalí himself proclaimed, «Without a doubt, there are other worlds, and they are located here, on Earth, in the center of the dome; you just need to look – and they will reveal themselves to you.»

Inside, the museum boasts the world’s largest collection of Dalí’s works, with over 4,000 exhibits spanning various phases of his career. Among these treasures are iconic pieces like «Self-Portrait with Humanism» (1923), «Port Alguer» (1924), «Ghost in the Form of a Girl with a Rose» (1932), «Portrait of Gala with Two Lamb Chops Balanced on Her Shoulder» (1933), «Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon» (1941), «Poem of America – Cosmic Athletes» (1943), «Basket of Bread» (1945), «Galatea of the Spheres» (1952), and many more.

The museum is not limited to paintings; it also features breathtaking sculptures, three-dimensional collages, and mechanical exhibits that provide insights into the artist’s inner world. You’ll encounter the renowned Mae West Room, a three-dimensional illusion capturing the likeness of the iconic American movie star.

Don’t miss the collection of jewelry items, crafted in collaboration with skilled jewelers, which is immensely popular among visitors. Additionally, the museum proudly showcases paintings by other renowned artists, including El Greco, Evarist Vallès, Antoni Pichot, Gerard Dhu, Marcel Duchamp, and more. A small crypt houses the preserved, embalmed body of Salvador Dalí himself.
