With our expert guide, you’ll skip the lines, enjoy the enchanting boys’ choir accompanied by majestic organ music, and savor delicious organic cheeses from local farms. Optionally, you can take a thrilling funicular ride and explore the art museum.
Located just 50 kilometers from Barcelona, Montserrat boasts unique rocky formations with whimsical names like ‘The Horse of Bernard,’ ‘The Mummy,’ ‘The Elephant’s Trunk,’ and ‘The Bishop’s Belly,’ earning it the nickname ‘Serrated Mountain.’
The heart of this area is the active Benedictine monastery, known as Monasterio de Montserrat (Spanish for Montserrat Monastery). It holds great religious significance and is a destination for pilgrims from around the world. Founded in the 11th century by Abbot Oliba of Ripoll, this monastery sits at an elevation of 725 meters above sea level. Over the centuries, it has endured destruction and reconstruction, resulting in changes to its architectural design. Notably, during the Napoleonic campaign in Spain, the monastery faced near destruction, and its restoration spanned nearly a century. It wasn’t until the 20th century that it assumed its present form. Today, it stands as an enduring symbol and source of pride for Catalonia.
Each year, millions of tourists and pilgrims from various countries visit this place to witness the primary treasure of the monastery — the Virgin of Montserrat, often referred to as the Black Madonna. She cradles the infant Christ and holds a sphere symbolizing the universe. It’s worth noting that a thousand years after the Virgin Mary’s apparition, in 1881, Pope Leo XIII declared her the patroness of Catalonia owing to numerous reported miracles. According to legend, if you kiss Madonna’s hand and make a wish, it is said to unquestionably come true.
The monastery is famous for its choir of 50 boys who perform a daily blessing to the Virgin Mary at 1 p.m., excluding Saturdays. People worldwide aspire to hear their angelic voices.
In 1911, a museum was established on the monastery’s grounds, housing an extensive collection of over 1,300 exhibits. The museum is organized into six main sections, showcasing archaeological discoveries from Eastern cultures, a range of sculptures, icons, and engravings depicting the Virgin Mary, jewelry spanning the 15th to 20th centuries, and a captivating painting gallery. The museum boasts an impressive array of classical and contemporary paintings by renowned artists such as El Greco, Caravaggio, Morales, Degas, Picasso, and Dalí. Additionally, there is an exhibition dedicated to Slavic and Byzantine icons.
During your visit, you’ll also have the opportunity to explore various other attractions, creating cherished memories and unforgettable experiences. Our experienced and attentive guide is ready to craft an informative express tour tailored to your preferences.
